Back at E3 2018, Microsoft revealed a host of studio acquisitions that included State of Decay developer Undead Labs. The State of Decay series has always been a Microsoft-backed publishing effort, going back to the original game’s 2013 debut on the xbox 360. In State of Decay 2, running a game was about setting up and maintaining a home base, and going out to areas like dilapidated suburbs to look for supplies. State of Decay 2 was a much better effort, showing what a bit more time and a bit more budget can do. While the original game was janky, it had a lot of potential, which Xbox noticed when they quickly acquired Undead Labs as one of their exclusive developers. State of Decay is a zombie survival franchise where you need to gather supplies, save survivors and build a home of sorts with other people during a zombie apocalypse.
